Between 1650 and 1950, it’s estimated that about 4,000 vessels were built in Essex, supplying a large percentage of the boats that fished the North Atlantic waters. And for a town that was typically populated by about 1,500 people, that’s quite a feat.
The Essex Shipbuilding Museum
The Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Main Street serves to educate others of those formative years of this proud town and the neighboring town of Gloucester is home to one of the few remaining wooden shipbuilding yards in the country.
